Atlantic Cape’s Student Government Association Welcomes Students Back to Campus in Mays Landing and Atlantic City

MAYS LANDING & ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic Cape Community College’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a two-day Welcome Back Celebration for students on September 19-20 on the Quad at the Mays Landing and cafeteria at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City campus.

On the Quad, the SGA provided free giveaway bags complete with goodies for students. The Community Food Bank of New Jersey donated a large box filled with farm fresh green peppers. A long line of hungry students enjoyed hot-off-the-grill hamburgers, cheeseburgers and veggie burgers. Fresh mango, lemon and strawberry flavored water ice kept palates cool. Inflatable activities included “ax” throwing and football toss while students competed in a five-on-five volleyball match. Live musical entertainment from DJ DAHVE kept the energy level high. The Southern New Jersey Family Medical Center provided free COVID-19 and flu shots near the Student Center.

New and returning students alike were treated to an afternoon filled with fellow student camaraderie, live entertainment, free food and refreshments. More than two dozen student clubs and organizations had representatives on hand to meet and greet students, and hand out information to those possibly interested in signing up.

SGA President Sultana Zakia is excited to have students back on campus for the new school year and enjoying themselves during the event.

“Today is all about fun. We want to welcome back the students and let them know that we have really amazing clubs to help them connect and talk to people, and make friends and memories,” Zakia said.

Randy Solano, a freshman Biomedical major from Egg Harbor Township, decided to stop by the festivities in between classes to visit some of the clubs.

“I wanted to kill some time, hang around and find some clubs that I like. I am really interested in Rewrites, Psychology and Biology, and a few others I have written down,” Solano said.

John Orve, a freshman Psychology major also from Egg Harbor Township, made the most of his time.

“I just signed up for the Pride Club and I am looking to sign up for Psychology Club too. Plus, I am here for the free food obviously,” Orve said.

At the Worthington Atlantic City campus, students, in between classes, visited the two lines of tables where student clubs and organizations, while also enjoying free snacks and live musical entertainment by DJ DAHVE.

Marybell Lilia, a sophomore Liberal Arts & Sociology dual major and work study program employee from Atlantic City, spent her break time learning all that is being offered for Atlantic Cape students.

“I was very interested in what everyone (clubs and organizations) had to say and I found that they were very informative,” said Lilia, who would like to transfer to Rowan University following graduation as she pursues a career in teaching.

The Worthington campus provides Atlantic City residents with the opportunity to pursue a degree in higher education conveniently and literally right in their backyards.

“I chose Atlantic Cape because it is only a 20-minute walk to my house, plus it’s very affordable and I really trust the professors here,” Lilia concluded.
