Atlantic Cape Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at All Three Campuses

Atlantic Cape Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month starting September 14 with numerous campus wide events while also recognizing the distinct history and culture that Hispanic Americans have contributed to this country’s diversity.

Hispanic Heritage Month flag raising on September 14, 2023To kick-off the month-long celebration, a Hispanic flag raising ceremony will take place on the Mays Landing campus Quad on Thursday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m. Live musical entertainment will be provided by the Rick Reyes Trio along with light refreshments in the cafeteria. This event is co-sponsored by Los Latinos Unidos (LLU) of Atlantic Cape.

The Student Government Association (SGA) will celebrate National Taco Day on Wednesday, October 4 with a “Taco Tuesday” lunch giveaway complete with tasty toppings of your choice and one drink per person. Attendees may pick up their first come/first served ticket in G105 and present it in the cafeteria for their free taco.

Atlantic City’s Charles D. Worthington campus will host three events during the month-long celebration: 

  • A Hispanic Heritage Display with various collections of books by Spanish authors from the campus library along with items from Hispanic countries around the world in the first-floor lobby from September 15 through October 15.
  • A Hispanic flag raising ceremony on Monday, September 18, 12 p.m. Light refreshments will be served in the cafeteria.
  • A Hispanic Heritage student & staff discussion panel on the topic “Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace Your Future” on Wednesday, October 4, 12:30 p.m. in room 204.

Atlantic Cape’s Cape May County campus will host its own Hispanic Heritage Display complete with book selections on Hispanic history from the Mullock Family Library in the first-floor lobby from September 15 through October 15. The campus’ “Taco Tuesday” event will be held on Tuesday, October 10 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

The month-long Hispanic Heritage celebration concludes on Wednesday, October 11 with a virtual film streaming of the movie “Zoot Suit.” It will be available to all Atlantic Cape students to view online that day only.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes Hispanic American contributions to the United States’ society and culture. It was designated in 1968 when Congress passed Pub. L. 90-498 authorizing and requesting the President to issue an annual proclamation of National Hispanic Heritage during mid-September. The first to do so was President Lyndon B. Johnson when he issued Proclamation 3869 on September 17, 1968.

September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Mexico, which celebrates its independence on September 16th.
