Black History Month events scheduled throughout February at Atlantic Cape

MAYS LANDING — The Pan-African Flag will be raised Tuesday, Feb. 1 in the quad of Atlantic Cape Community College’s Mays Landing campus signaling the start of Black History Month and a series of events that will run throughout the month at all three campuses.

“Atlantic Cape Community College is proud to celebrate and commemorate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans in our community and throughout the country, which is why we have cultivated a series of events that will allow students, faculty and staff to engage, reflect and learn,” said Natalie Devonish, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Atlantic Cape.

The Day of Unity event, sponsored by the Student Government Association in partnership with the Office of Student Engagement and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, begins at 12:30 p.m. to celebrate campus unity and diversity. Music and refreshments will be offered in the Student Center.

A Day of Service, which was postponed from January, will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, students are invited to help stock to the shelves of the new campus commissary, which will offer items like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and more for free. The commissary is an extension of the Campus Food Pantry services. Participants are asked to register here.

On Feb. 8, the public is invited to the Student Center on the Mays Landing campus to view "Talking About HER Story," a moving exhibit of African American women and icons in history, presented by the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey.

On Feb. 22, at 11:30 a.m., local story-teller Michelle Washington Wilson will present “Harriet Tubman, Tales from the Cape,” a virtual event open to the public. This presentation will focus on the life and times of abolitionist Tubman, conductor of the Underground Railroad and women’s suffrage supporter, who was active in Cape May County.
