MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College’s Chapter of the Psi Beta Honor Society held its 3rd Annual Induction Ceremony at Carême’s, the College’s student-run gourmet restaurant on the Mays Landing campus, before numerous friends, family, and college faculty, staff and classmates on April 15.
“Atlantic Cape’s Psi Beta Chapter dates back to 1996 when Dr. Marty Marino established it. At the time, Atlantic Cape was a charter member and one of the first college’s in the country to have a Psi Beta Chapter,” said Madeline Barrows, assistant professor, Psychology. “This afternoon, we are delighted to have the third annual ceremony of Atlantic Cape’s revived chapter. It also gives me great pleasure to serve as the advisor of this chapter."
The Psi Beta Honor Society recognizes the academic excellence of students in psychology at two-year community colleges. Atlantic Cape’s chapter was created in 1996 by Dr. Marty Marino and was recently restarted as an active student club in time for the 2022-23 academic school year.
More than 20 students were inducted into the Psi Beta Chapter this year and they include: Leatrice Brown, Rayna Brusiewski, Darismar Cabrera, Ayitiana Campos, Hailey Dannenhauer, Dorothy Davis, Marlene Delarosa, Grant Firedland, Wazirah Johnson, Morgan Kenny, Drahcir Knight, Sylvia Romero, Dennis Sanchez, Imelda Sarabia, Ivanies Soto, Nichole Tanghare, Nicholas Todd, Juwan Torres, Alex Tuohy, Lilly Wisniewski and Adelaide Young.
“Psi Beta provides national recognition and serves as an aid for stimulating interest in psychology as an academic and professional field of endeavor. The knowledge gained from the study of psychology is applicable to any career,” added Barrows. “Students feel a sense of community with others in psychology. As they learn more about the larger field of psychology, members are eligible to win national awards in research and community service.”
Dr. Denice Coulter, senior dean, Liberal Studies and Culinary Arts, provided the keynote address. Psychology Club President Isaiah Watson and Psychology Club Vice President Priya Momi both spoke before the audience. Christine Scarpa, senior adjunct professor, Social Science, was inducted in to the Society as a co-advisor.
Throughout the year, students participate in events that broaden their knowledge of the field of psychology. Visit atlanticcape.edu/clubs for more information on the many student clubs and organizations that are available at Atlantic Cape.
